Bảo Yến or Why Vietnamese Tease Me

So, it’s been well known (to some people) that I’ve spent the last six months of my life, maybe more looking for a hard copy of an album that I still own but in a relic format (DAC). I wasn’t able to do that, but I was able to do one better. I found some of the songs in question, and I am terribly happy about it. I have been listening to these songs non-stop for the last few days. Interestingly, i still can’t find one song in particular, but I’m persistent. I’ll keep at it.

So why do Vietnamese people make fun of me? Good question, it’s because I listen to old people music or something like that. Apparently, Bao Yen sings old style music, which basically amounts to their version of country music. You’ll find it no surprise that I don’t actually like country music here in the US, I think it sucks pretty hardcore. Anyhow, there you have it!

I know you’re just dying to hear some of it, so I’ve taken the opportunity to let you have a taste. Enjoy!

Nỗi buồn gác trọ

You can save it or stream it if it’s supported by your browser. Have fun with that. Now on to the good shit. Grant, Hier ist der Hase!!

Boa Yen (Viet Nam) - yes it's actually two words.

One of the best voices ever. EVAR!

Winnie (Viet Nam)

Almost a nun-like quality. I wanna violate it. ^_^

Cabelas – Scope Purchase

Last Friday, I purchased a scope at Cabela’s. I received some really useful information from one of the sales guys there who was hanging about the scopes. Although I think he didn’t take my ambitions seriously, and why should he, he doesn’t know a thing about me; he was very helpful. I ultimately had a scope in mind, but I listened to all of his information since he let me know he was a designated marksman. I went ahead and purchased a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T M1 Scope in 4.5×14 w/ 50mm objective. The scope was installed and I was given the box and I placed my receipt within it. I went home, and upon getting up the next morning, I went to my father’s house where there are clear lines of sight high up. I noticed that beyond 9x, the scope was fuzzy with targets. This concerned me. I couldn’t do much about it at the time as i was busy helping my father hand load some rounds. I work nights, and so caught up on sleep and Tuesday (22nd) I went out to Cabelas and got the scope looked at.

“Parallax Focus is broken, doesn’t seem to do anything.”

Right, that’s kind of why I’m in the store. I could have told you it was broken, but you didn’t ask. I did write it down on the form which had a section for notes. The people were very polite, but there was something incorrect about the way this situation was unfolding. I could tell. They suggested I send the scope to Leupold to have it fixed, or (long pause) I could exchange the scope; however, I would need the box and receipt. Luckily, I brought those items with me for just such an occasion. I mean I’d only had the scope for a couple days and never fired a shot from the rifle. Needless to say I wasn’t pleased, but I didn’t clown at the store. I simply waited for them to replace the scope.

Well, apparently I had to talk to a manager, after the man said the serial number on the box didn’t match the serial number on the scope. Although this didn’t make a lot of sense to me I waited for them to come back with a new scope on my rifle and everything be in working order. But wait! That’s not the way life works for me. Apparently, it was explained to me by Bruce, a manager inside the gun section of the store, that the scope was a counterfeit. I didn’t understand how this had anything to do with me, but I was told that they weren’t going to exchange the scope, and that I wasn’t going to get my money back either, because they needed to do an investigation as to how the scope got on my rifle. Now, my response to that wasn’t pleasant. It consisted of me saying, “Oh wait, that’s easy. I know the answer to that one. Your people put it on my rifle.” He wasn’t terribly pleased, but he explained to me that they needed to forward this up to Corporate. Now, again, I’m confused as to how this is my damn problem. They put the scope on, and any review of the security footage would show that the scope I was escorted out of the building with by their staff on Friday, is the same scope that I walked back into the building with yesterday. Obviously I was missing some vital information. I left with my broken scope and now fairly useless rifle and started to leave the parking lot.

The more I thought about it though, the more it sounded like I was being indirectly accused of trying to defraud the company. This obviously pissed me off, and I got increasingly angry. As a result I marched myself back inside and went to the Customer Service counter and proceeded to explain this situation to the lady at the counter. I was visibly pissed off; we’re talking 1200 USD here, but I didn’t yell at her. It wasn’t her fault that some douche bags were trying to cheat me out of my money  and/or scope.

In comes Brian from stage right. Brian thinks what I’ve explained sounds stupid. He’s going to club Bruce upside the head with my empty scope box. I’m becoming less displeased as we walk back to the firearms counter. My lessening rage turns into full blown nuclear fall out when Brian disappears into the back with Bruce and a coupel of other workers. Brian comes out and explains that this investigation needs to take place, and he continues to parrot what I was told by this manager, Bruce. Can’t exchange the scope, can’t get my money back until the investigation is completed. Well why do I have to hold on to the scope exactly? This seems like a store problem. They should be taking the scope and then giving me a new one, followed by them getting the issue resolved. I don’t need to be involved. Ultimately, dealing with this store has been a failure. It’s not like this was a 200 USD scope, this was 1200 USD. I want my fucking money back.

I go home and I immediately call the Customer Service number: 1.800.237.4444

I eventually speak to Cindy, who listens to what I tell her, and then asks for the store number register number, etc. She then puts me on hold and I’m there on hold for a long while. I was becoming upset, because I began to feel like I am once again about to get the shaft. Cindy comes back and explains that she spoke to her supervisor, and further they are both horrified at what has happened. This is a definite change in attitude from the retail location (store # 020 by the way). I listen with interest as she tells me that I should go back to the store with my rifle and scope, have them remove it and put another scope on there or face the wrath of some corporate Customer Service Managers. I told her that I lived pretty far away from the place and coupled with the fact that I work nights, I wouldn’t have time to accomplish this task. So she came up with a brilliant solution. She is having a new scope delivered to the store, and being held at the Customer Service desk for me. An associate will escort the scope with me to the gun counter where I will have the scope mounted and sighted. I will ensure that it’s working, and I will then take the broken scope back to the Customer Service desk where I will get my money back for having driven out to this place three times now, and for being treated like what amounts to a criminal by the retail store staff.

Cindy is awesome, and Cabelas should be happy to have her. I’m really pleased with how this resolution is being played out and I feel like I can take more business to this company. This is an example of being wronged and the company wanting to make it right. I take my shooting seriously, and intend to purchase more items from their store, now that this resolution is moving forward I feel I can buy in confidence. Congrats Cabelas, you’ve actually really impressed me. My family members and I will definitely continue to shop with you and recommend your company as a place to obtain associated gear. Thanks!

That's a good morning....

Cell Phones, Movies, Oh My!

Let’s start with the easy stuff first. AT&T sucks for users that want to actually have an Android phone. I am one of those people, and luckily my contract is up. On the downside, I don’t like CDMA phones (that gets rid of Sprint), Verizon doesn’t offer a discount for my place of employment (and they are expensive really for no reason, not to mention poor coverage in my area); however, there is T-mobile. They do have cheap plans; however, I am not sure if they have a discount which I can take advantage of with my place of employment. I mean, you can’t really pass up 24% discounts off of service. I’m just sayin’.

I suppose I could just buy myself an unlocked Android phone that works on the 3G frequency that AT&T uses (the Google Nexus would work just fine, but 500+ USD???). I suppose I should just continue to wait, but I just can’t stand the idea of not having a device that I can root and do whatever I want with. Totally unfair, but really super shallow =-P

So then we move on to The Last Airbender, I’m sure some of you have seen the previews for it. It looks pretty cool, as I was/am a fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series; however, it has some serious failings. I may have written about this before, but I’m too lazy to search. Anyhow, my biggest issues with the movie is the blatant white washing. I was thinking of boycotting the movie and simply getting it from the Pirate Bay once it hit the torrents; however, I’m some what undecided. It’s also kind of concerning because Mr. M. Night Shyamalan is really a kind of hit and miss sort of director. Some of the movies he has directed are really pretty awesome. For instance, I’m a fan of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Lady in the Water; however, I’d go so far as to say his other work (in my opinion) was really rather horrible. So what is going to happen with The Last Airbender? It’s pretty much a coin toss I guess.

And the “Oh My” part. Inter-personal relationships. It seems to me things are becoming increasingly complicated, and increasingly unpleasant. I generally try not to be a pessimist when it comes to working out perceived or actual problems between myself and others; however, I’m having a difficult time remaining optimistic. I’m becoming displeased with certain actions and behaviors that generally I would just attribute to how a person works. I try to be understanding of how a person works, how they behave and how their personality and experiences shape their wants, needs, and actions to obtain those things. I’m finding my understanding and patience lacking. On the other hand, I tend to not take the easy way out, so I wonder what will happen? Hrmm…hrmm. Good question!

Later gators.

So serious!

I wonder if she looks so serious all the time - not that I'd see her face, but it's a thought.

Muslims, TV, and Me

I don’t know about some of you out there roaming around minding your own business on the interblag, but I’ve been reading a lot about these bannings of certain Muslim paraphernalia. The veil and burqa come to mind. I’m not sure how this is being portrayed; however, I have a pretty good idea.

We need to protect the Muslim women by taking away these antiquated items of the Muslim faith. It is used to oppress the female condition.

That sounds like something a lot of people can get behind. Let’s look at some of the reasons for which countries are attempting and succeeding in subverting Muslims on the whole: Belgium votes on and passes a ban on the Muslim veil, France moving toward banning veil in public.

I understand there are some Muslims that support this endeavor. I can see how one might want to support such a thing. I just don’t happen to agree. I find this not terribly different (no matter with how much fervor the christians are going to say it’s different to a degree that one just can not fathom) from the “persecution” of Christians in the Good book. Law and action was taken again christians according to the good book for simply being christian. So, er, what exactly is happening now to Muslims? Exactly.

Enough of that then. I just downloaded all of the existing episodes (in high def no less!) of V. This show is pretty good! I don’t watch much TV, so it took me a while to discover it was on and so yah, I got it all from the Pirate Bay sans commercials. I really enjoy commercial-less stuff. I don’t watch them. I think of them as multiple small intermissions to whatever I might be viewing. As a result, I no longer watch traditional TV. Enter my savior the Pirate Bay. Anyhow, there’s that. I was a fan of the original V series also, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

Speaking of the commercials. I heard about this, went to see it, and holy hell, this is pretty awesome:

And of course: Let’s make it HOT:

Korean - Yes, Grant, I know.......

Could you flatten that out a little? ^_^

Heavy Rain and Dante's Inferno

I’m a game addict. I buy video games because my heart is an emotional black hole that requires constant sensation. Just to avoid feeling dead inside all the time. So I turn to video games, it’s my way of dealing with the bottomless pit of despair. To help quell this constant emptiness I purchased two games, Heavy Rain and Dante’s Inferno. Dante’s Inferno is basically God of War with a  penchant for the bizarre. It takes you straight into Hell and tries to disturb you more with each moment that you’re there. The further you progress the more one encounters grotesque obstacles to their path. It’s visually beautiful and oh so disturbing at the same time. This is probably why I enjoy it so much! How far will it go? I don’t know — and here’s why!

Heavy Rain was released yesterday. Heavy Rain has been on my radar for a long time and I’d pretty much decided that if the demo was even sort of decent, I was going to get the game and play the hell out of it. Turns out the demo was fucking amazing. I haven’t actually slept since I purchased the game. Partly because I was up all damn day playing it, and also because I had to work in the evening. Now, I’m soon to get off work and guess what I’m going to do? Yep, go play more Heavy Rain. The best way to describe it? Watching a movie you take part in. Not just simple select a dialogue and then watch it play out, but take action within the context of the movie playing out on the screen. It’s fuckin’ fantastic. I’ve played it non-stop save for this whole work thing. I need to figure out how to accomplish PS3 Heavy Rain action at work. =-/ Hrm.

Let’s see what happens when I get home! Will I sleep? Will I play Heavy Rain? How far will I go for the game I love?

Okay so it's not exactly Real World Bunny - It's Game Bunny? Excellent?
